Softball Drops Two Against C.W. Post; 4-2, 4-3

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team suffered two tough losses to C.W. Post, 4-2 and 4-3 in extra innings, this Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fall to 13-14-1 and 9-2-1 in the NYCAC. The Pioneers improve to 21-9 on the season and 14-2 in the NYCAC.

Game One - After a quiet start, the Pioneers got on board in the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Post extended its lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning on a solo homerun by junior Kristen Berdinka. Junior Theresa Kotulak answered with a homerun in the bottom of the fourth to put the Panthers within one. Sophomore Amy Delmore belted a solo homerun, her second in two days, to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning. After a scoreless sixth inning, junior Krystle Scala knocked in a two-run homer for the win. Freshman Sheila Feldman (2-3) took the loss, allowing 13 hits, four runs, four earned and seven strikeouts.

Adelphi had two runs on seven hits and no errors. C.W. Post had four runs on 13 hits and one error.

Game Two - After three scoreless innings, the Pioneers scored in the fourth on a single by freshman Morgan Richeson, bringing in sophomore Kelsey Walker who earlier reached second on an error. Adelphi answered with two runs in the fourth as sophomore Beth Fletcher singled to centerfield and advanced on a hit by junior Tara Rice. JuniorTonia Trapani's shot to centerfield, brought home Fletcher for the RBI. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Rice scored on a wild pitch.

Post evened the score in the sixth, which eventually forced the extra innings. In the top of the ninth, the Pioneers took advantage of an Adelphi error, eventually scoring two runners to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Carla Buonviaggio hammered a solo homerun to right field to bring Adelphi to within one. However, the Pioneer defense managed to hold the Panthers scoreless for the win. Buonviaggio (5-6) recorded the loss on the mound, allowing 10 hits, four runs, two earned, walking seven and striking out nine.

Adelphi had three runs on eight hits with two errors. Post had four runs on 10 hits with one error.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow as they travel down to Philadelphia University in a make-up game. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
