Adelphi Splits With Queens, 14-9, 11-5

Flushing, N.Y. - Adelphi hit five home runs in the first game of a two-game set to claim a 14-9 win. In the second game the Panthers left eight men on base and gave up five runs in the fourth to fall, 11-5 to Queens. With the split Adelphi improves to 13-10 overall and remain even in the conference at 4-4, Queens rises to 3-12 overall and 2-6 in the NYCAC.

Adelphi fell behind early in the first game, giving up a run in the bottom of the first. Frank Alesia (Valley Stream, N.Y.) put the Panthers on top with a three-run home run in the top of the third. Adelphi continued their hot hitting in the top of the fourth when Tom Sicari (Westbury, N.Y.) belted a three-run homer of his own to increase Adelphi's lead to 6-1.

Queens battled back picking up four runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull to within one run 6-5. Nick Testani (Williston Park, N.Y.) hit the third home run of the game for Adelphi in the top of the seventh to help the Panthers extend their lead to 9-5. But, Queens would not go away, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 9.

Adelphi responded in the top of the eighth, putting the game out of reach with two more home runs. Alesia hit his second three-run shot of the game and Bryan Horrmann (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) hit a homer of his own to put the Panthers ahead for good 13-9. Adelphi tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth to claim a 14-9 win.

Mike Thompson (Bethpage, N.Y.) picked up the win for Adelphi, pitching just over two innings of scoreless relief.

In the second game Queens again jumped out to an early one run lead. But Adelphi earned two walks to put two men on base for Tom Cali (Shirley, N.Y.), who drove a run in with a double. Ricky Nicholson (Massapequa, N.Y.) grounded out but managed to drive a run in on the play to put Adelphi up 2-1.

Queens picked up a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at two, but Adelphi collected two more runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Horrmann. Queens responded by erupting in the bottom of the fourth for five runs to take a commanding 7-4 lead. The Knights would add on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

The Panthers return to action Monday, April 12th when they travel to Albany, New York to take on the College of Saint Rose at 4:00 pm.
