April 10, 2004

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi gave up five goals in the second quarter but clawed back, scoring five goals of their own in the fourth to force overtime. Unfortunately the fifth ranked Panthers lost the face-off and the game in overtime to fourth ranked NYIT, 12-11. With the loss Adelphi drops to 4-3 overall and evens their conference mark at 1-1, NYIT improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the NYCAC.

The Panthers opened the scoring four minutes into action when Kim Delfs (Wandi, Australia) scored off of an assist from Matt Baccarella (Franklin Square, N.Y.) to give Adelphi a 1-0 edge. NYIT answered back six minutes later when Joe Droge (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) knotted the game at one.

The Panthers went back on top, closing the first quarter with a goal and opening the second quarter with a matching result. Gregory Kalberer (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored to end the first and Bobby Magrin (Fairport, N.Y.) scored to open the second, pushing Adelphi's lead to 3-1. But the Bears erupted to score five unanswered goals in the second quarter. Five different NYIT players scored during the run.

The third quarter opened with Adelphi down 6-3, and the Panthers still could not stop the bleeding as Brian Boyle (Westbury, N.Y.) scored to extend NYIT's edge to 7-3. Finally the Panthers reacted, scoring three straight goals to pull to within one, 7-6, with 10:48 to play in the third.

But the Bears responded again, answering with three goals of their own to pull ahead 10-6 with 14:25 to play in the game. Then freshman Stephen Mortimer (Adelaide, Australia) came alive, scoring two consecutive goals to pull Adelphi to within striking distance at 10-8. Doug Machen (Annapolis, M.D.) completed the run, scoring with 6:37 to play to pull the Panthers to within one. Tom Zummo (Islip, N.Y.) responded by bulling his way to the goal and scoring to give NYIT an 11-9 edge.

With 2:15 left to play Magrin again pulled Adelphi to within one on an assist from Delfs. With less then a minute left Kalberer brought the Panthers all the way back, slipping one past Anthony Letterel (West Islip, N.Y.) to tie the game at 11.

Matt Schomburg (Perth, Australia) and Joseph Vasold (Wantagh, N.Y.) faced-off to open overtime. Vasold won the face-off and NYIT quickly called time out. NYIT came out of the time out and quickly attacked, Droge drew the defense and dumped to Paul Montali (New City, N.Y.) who put the game winner past Adelphi's Brian Volpi (Lawrence, N.Y.).

Volpi made a career-high 11 saves to keep the Panthers in the game. Letterel collected 10 saves in the win.

Adelphi finished the game 2-6 on extra-man opportunities, while NYIT was 3-13. The Panthers also held an advantage in shots, 39-35.

Adelphi returns to action Wednesday, April 14th when they host LIU-Southampton at 3:30 pm on Stiles Field.
