Junior Katherine Hock (Mineola, N.Y.) blasted four of her game-high six goals in the first half to lead Adelphi past Mercyhurst College, 15-4, in its season opener this afternoon at Stiles Field. The Panthers improve to 1-0, while the Lakers drop to 2-3.
Hock, already the Adelphi career goals leader, picked up her 100th career goal in the thirteenth minute of play, on an assist from freshman Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.), to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead. Hock's all-time career goals record is at 105 and counting.
Mercyhurst opened the scoring early in the first half as Kelsey French (Corning, N.Y.) scored in the fourth minute. Freshmen Diana Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) along with sister, Lauren scored the next two goals to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead through the 11 minute mark. Adelphi continued its run, with senior Karen Sulinski (Huntington, N.Y.) scoring on a free position shot at 16:22. Freshman Tara Grodotzke (Rocky Point, N.Y.) picked up her first collegiate goal, lifting Adelphi to 5-1. The Lopez sisters would combine for two more goals, with Lauren dishing out two assists to Diana for goals in the 18th and 28th minutes. The Lakers rallied back for two late goals at the end of the half to trail 10-3.
The Panther offense continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring Mercyhurst, 5-1. Hock along with senior Leigh Fennessey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) each had two goals in the half.
Adelphi held a 12-9 advantage on draw controls and a 39-11 shot advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Allyson Murphy (Williston Park, N .Y.) picked up her first collegiate win with six saves. Mercyhurst junior goalie Jessica Bunker (Corning, N.Y.) had 12 stops.
The Panthers continue their three game home stand, hosting Assumption College this Friday, March 19, at 4:00 p.m.
