Junior Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) poured in a career-best 24 points, including 4-of-4 from beyond the arc to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to 82-75 victory at C.W. Post on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers improve to 13-7 overall and 12-5 in the NYCAC, while the Pioneers drop to 9-10 on the season and 8-10 in the NYCAC.
Also scoring in double figures for the Panthers was senior Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, N.J.) with 18 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) contributed 17 points along with six rebounds, four blocks and three steals.
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before the Panthers responded with a 6-2 run to tie the game, 6-6, on a layup by Whitney. Adelphi continued its run, scoring six more unanswered points to hold a 12-6 advantage at 14:14. Post rallied back on a 14-6 run to take the lead. The game would tie three more times, with both teams trading baskets. A jumper by junior Laura Phillips (Plattsburg, N.Y.) at 5:48 gave Adelphi the lead, which they would hold on going into intermission, 37-35.
Post opened the second half on a 5-0 run. The Panthers roared back on a 15-0 run to lead, 52-40, with 15:01 remaining. The Pioneers began to chip away at the lead, eventually closing to within five points, 62-56, at 8:53. Hurdle accounted for six of the next eight Adelphi points and the Panthers quickly opened up a comfortable 70-57 advantage. Adelphi would lead by as much as 15 points in the game with 4:06 remaining. A late charge by the Pioneers saw them close to 80-75 on a 12-2 run. With just 14 seconds remaining, senior Kerri Kirschbaum (Leonardo, N.J.) hit both free throws to seal the win, 82-75.
On the game, the Panthers shot a season-best 55.6 percent from the field, including 75 percent from three-point range. Adelphi also held a 41-31 advantage on rebounds.
C.W. Post had four players in double figures, led by junior Thalia Jackson (Baldwin, N.Y.) with 19 points. Senior Keona Dessau (Philadelphia, PA) had 17 points and eight rebounds.
Adelphi is back in action next Wednesday, February 11, hosting Mercy College at 5:30 p.m.
