AU Women Stunned By NYIT, 71-75

The Adelphi women's basketball team saw its three-game win streak come to an end as they suffered a 75-71 loss at NYIT on Thursday evening. With the loss the Panthers drop to 12-7 overall and 11-5 in the NYCAC. The Lady Bears snap a four-game losing streak to improve to 5-14 on the season and 5-12 in the NYCAC.

Despite three players in double figures, the Panthers shot just 32.4 percent from the field and were out rebounded by the Lady Bears 40-33. Both teams combined for a whopping 65 turnovers, with Adelphi picking up 28.

Senior Jamie Douglas scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half. Junior Meranne Whitney had a team-high 17 points along with nine rebounds. Sophomore Carlyshia Hurdle added 10 points and nine boards.

Adelphi took an early 6-3 lead in the opening minutes of the first half. The Lady Bears capitalized on an 11-3 run to hold a 14-9 advantage at 12:25. The Panthers began to chip away at the deficit, outscoring NYIT 14-6 over the next five minutes to take a 23-20 lead. The game would tie twice more before Adelphi would pull open an eight point lead capped by a jumper by Douglas with 1:28 remaining. In the final minute NYIT rallied, forcing four straight Adelphi turnovers which they converted to an 8-1 run. The Panthers held onto a 37-36 lead at the half.

The Lady Bears quickly took the lead in the second half on a steal by senior Georgia Gordon and a three-pointer from senior Lindsay Klimkowski. Adelphi struggled from the field, scoring their first basket of the second half at the 16:54 mark. The Panthers trailed by as much as eight points, 49-57, with 10:43 remaining. Spurred by two three-point baskets from senior Kerri Kirschbaum, Adelphi rattled off 14 unanswered points, 63-57, with 7:31 on the clock. NYIT continued to fight back, quickly closing the gap on a 15-4 run, 72-67, with two minutes left in regulation. Adelphi closed to within one point on a layup by Whitney with 23 seconds. The Panthers managed to commit four fouls in the final seconds as the Lady Bears pulled away for the 75-71 victory.

Gordon led all players with 24 points, 17 coming in the first half. Klimkowski had 15 points.

Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, traveling to C.W. Post. Tip off is 2:00 p.m.
