Adelphi was just nine of 13 from the foul line, while Philadelphia converted 28 of 34 attempts, to top the Panthers 67-57. With the loss Adelphi falls to 12-11 overall and evens their conference record at 10-10, Philadelphia improves to 22-5 overall and 18-3 in conference play.
The first half started out looking like a defensive battle with Philadelphia and Adelphi combining for just 20 points in the first seven minutes of action. Then Philadelphia went on a quick 7-3 run to take a three point lead, 16-13 on two free throws by Graham Edwards (Pottsville, PA). Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) answered, hitting a long three-pointer to tie the game at 16 with 10:08 to play in the first half.
The Rams responded to Wagner's three with a jumper by Jerry Clark (Willingboro, N.J.), which sparked a 12-2 run that gave Philadelphia a ten point edge, 28-18 with 5:09 to play in the first half. The Panthers closed the half with a 12-4 run to pull to within two points going in to halftime trailing, 32-30.
The Rams came out quick, hitting two jumpers in the first 1:30 of the second half to edge out to a 36-30 lead. Wagner hit two consecutive three-pointers to tie the game for a third time at 36 all with 16:43 left to play. Adelphi tied the game for the fifth and final time at 40 with 14:42 left on the clock. But Brett Storm (Oreland, PA) hit a three-pointer to give the Rams a three point edge.
The closest that the Panthers would get the rest of the way was four points, with 2:35 to play on a short jumper by Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.). The Rams pulled away, converting 18 free throw attempts and no field goals in the last 13 minutes of play to walk away with a 67-57 victory. It was Philadelphia's first win in Woodruff Hall since January 29, 1993.
Wagner led the Panthers with 15 points and five rebounds. Teammate Mosby chipped in nine points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Philadelphia was led by Edwards who scored a game-high 27 points, including 16-16 from the free throw line and grabbed eight rebounds. Teammate Storm also scored in double figures, adding 17 points on 4-6 shooting from behind the three-point line.
Adelphi returns to action Thursday, February 19th when they play host to visiting Southampton at 7:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
