Feb. 11, 2004

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi got six free throws from Thomas McCormack (Breezy Point, N.Y.) in the last 31 seconds to extend Mercy's losing streak to five and claim a 72-63 win. With the win the Panthers improve to 12-9 overall and 10-8 in the conference, while Mercy falls to 6-15 overall and 4-15 in NYCAC play.

The game started slowly with Mercy and Adelphi combining for just 11 points in the first three and a half minutes. Then Adelphi went on an 8-0 run to take a 13-6 advantage with 14:34 left to play in the first half. Four Panther players scored during the run, including a three-pointer from Ben Kenyon (Hillside, N.J.).

Mercy charged back to cut the Panther lead to two with 9:15 to play on a made free throw by Kevin Green (Brooklyn, N.Y.). McCormack answered with a jumper and a free throw to push Adelphi's edge back to four. With 2:14 to play in the half Mercy tied the game after Dominic Cuzzi (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a jumper and Elvis Damjanovic (Queens, N.Y.) hit a free throw to pull the Flyers even at 31.

McCormack hit a three-pointer with 1:22 left to give the Panthers a 34-31 lead, but Mercy entered the locker room down just one after Kris Laurenceau (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit to free throws.

Adelphi opened the second half sluggish but took advantage of Mercy's equally slow start to slip out to an 11 point lead, 53-42, on a Samuel Jenkins' (Brooklyn, N.Y.) bomb with 11:04 to play.

But Mercy would not quit, and played their way back into the game, cutting the Panthers lead to just four, 61-57, with 2:59 to play on a jumper by Damjanovic. That was as close as the Flyers would get, McCormack closed the door, hitting six free throws in the last minute to give Adelphi a 72-63 win.

Will Smith (Manasquan, N.J.) and Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) each chipped in with 12 points, while Taylor Murphy (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Cuzzi paced Mercy with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds, teammate Laurenceau added 17 points.

Adelphi returns to action Saturday, February 14th when they travel to the University of New Haven for a 4:00 pm conference show down.
