Adelphi got a late jumper from James Samuels (Uniondale, N.Y.) and hit seven of eight free throws over the last 47 seconds to pull away and top New Haven 63-55. With the win Adelphi improves to 5-2 overall and remains unbeaten in the conference at 4-0, while New Haven is still searching for their first win of the season at 0-5 and 0-4 in the NYCAC.
The Panthers jumped out to an 11-2 lead just 15:39 into the first half. But New Haven increased the defensive pressure and held Adelphi to just three points over the next seven minutes, while scoring eight points to pull within four, 14-10 with 8:32 to play.
The Panthers outscored New Haven 19-13 over the final eight minutes to head into the locker room with a ten point edge, 22-23.
Adelphi started the second half much like the first and rolled out to a 17 point lead on the back of a 10-3 run. The Panthers pushed the advantage to 17 for the second time at the 14:03 mark after a lay-up by junior Eric Martin (Laurelton, N.Y.). But the Chargers battled back, cutting Adelphi's lead to just two with 2:03 to play.
The Panthers Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) hit two free throws to push the lead back to four, but New Haven responded with another bucket closing the gap to two again. Samuel's jumper with 1:13 to play put Adelphi back on top by four again and then the Panthers hit on seven of eight free throws to ice the game.
John Sullivan (Bridgeport, CT) led the Chargers with 16 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Teammate Brian Moriarty (Suffield, CT) chipped in 15 points, three rebounds and four assists.
Adelphi had three players in double-figures led by Martin's game-high 18 points and four rebounds. Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed 16 points and six rebounds while Wagner added 10 points and five rebounds.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, December 11th when they play host to visiting NYIT at 3:00 pm in Woodruff Hall.
