The Panthers held C.W. Post to 30 percent shooting from the field for the game and outscored the Pioneers 42-29 in the second half to leave Woodruff Hall with a 68-54 decision. With the victory Adelphi pushes their win streak to five games (5-0) and sit at a perfect 4-0 in the NYCAC, while C.W. Post falls to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The game started slow as both teams struggled to find their shooting touch early. C.W. Post took advantage of Adelphi's slow start to move out to a 10-8 lead with 13:42 to play. Despite having several key players in foul trouble in the first half the Panthers took a five point lead, 26-21 on the front end of a one-and-one by freshman Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.).
But the Pioneers Nicole Campbell (Islandia, N.Y.) and Noelle Mitchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) scored the last four points of the half to pull the Pioneers to within one point, 26-25 heading into the locker room.
Adelphi emerged from the locker room and jumped on the Pioneers early, scoring the first 10 points of the second half to edge out to a 36-25 lead with 17:46 to play. Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) had five points, including a three-pointer during the run.
C.W. Post would get no closer then seven the rest of the way, trailing by as much as 20 points during the second half before eventually falling by a score of 68-54.
Basimah Thompson (Galloway, NJ) led the way for C.W. Post with a team-high 13 points and four rebounds. Thalia Jackson (Baldwin, N.Y.) was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 12 points, Jackson also grabbed six rebounds.
Mangone paced Adelphi with 18 points and six rebounds, teammates Courtney Carpenter (Tom's River, NJ) and Meranne Whitney (Nashua, NH) chipped in 10 points a piece.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, December 11th when they play host to visiting NYIT at 5:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
