Women's Basketball Falls To Tourney Host Barry, 63-51

Miami Shores, FL - The Adelphi University women's basketball team was held to just 20 points in the second half and dropped their second game in a row to host Barry University 63-51. With the loss Adelphi falls to 7-2 overall while Barry improves to 8-4 on the season.

The Panthers charged out to a quick 6-0 lead on the strength of two buckets by Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.). Barry answered right back with an 8-2 run to knot the game at eight all with 15:04 to play in the first half.

Adelphi used a 9-2 run to pull out to their largest lead of the half, 22-15 at the 8:33 mark. Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) converted two lay-ups during the run. Barry again answered back eventually taking what looked to be a three-point lead heading into the half two free throws by Nikki Collins (Lufkin, Texas). Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) hit a deep three-pointer as time expired to tie the game at 31 apiece at the half.

The Panthers luck did not hold in the second half as Barry outscored Adelphi 32-20 over the final 20 minutes of action. Barry pushed out to a 12 point advantage with 3:59 to play on a made free throw by Yashica Nesbit (Miami, FL). Adelphi clawed back but could pull no closer then seven over the final four minutes of action, eventually falling 63-51.

Nicole Denmom (Slater, Iowa) led Barry with 18 points and grabbed three rebounds. Karla Mast (New Buffalo, Mich.), Nesbit and Collins all scored in double figures, with Collins scoring 13 and Mast and Nesbit adding 11 apiece.

Adelphi was led by Meranne Whitney (Nashua, NH) who scored 13 points and added four rebounds. Hurdle was the only other Panther in double-figures with 11 points, she also contributed five rebounds. For her play in the Barry Classic Hurdle was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, January 5th when they travel to Sparkill, New York to resume their conference play against St. Thomas Aquinas at 5:30 pm.
