Women Hold Off NYIT, 82-71

Garden City, N.Y. - Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) led a balanced Adelphi attack with 18 points as the women's basketball team defeated NYIT, 82-71, on Saturday evening at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers extend their win streak to 6-0 and 5-0 in conference play. The Lady Bears drop to 4-3 and 3-3 in the NYCAC.

A total of six Adelphi players scored in double figures. Seniors Courtney Carpenter (Tom's River, N.J.) and Meranne Whitney (Nashau, N.H.) along with freshman Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) each had 14 points. Junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) and sophomore Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, N.J.) chipped in 10 points a piece.

Tied 5-5 at 15:56 in the first half, the Lady Bears went on an 11-5 run to realize their largest lead of the night. Adelphi rallied back, with Carpenter scoring four points in an 8-1 run to lead 18-17 with 6:20 remaining. NYIT kept it close, with the game tying three times over the next two minutes. Trailing 25-26 at 3:26, the Panthers outscored the Lady Bears 8-2 to lead 33-28 at the end of the first half.

Adelphi opened the second half with four unanswered points to extend its lead to 37-28. NYIT continued to chip away at the AU lead, knotting the score at 45 on a jumper by freshman Alexis Tyson (Roosevelt, N.Y.) with 12:45 left in regulation. The Panthers roared back on a 15-0 run capped by two made free throws by Mangone at 8:17. The Lady Bears managed to cut the lead to five, 68-63, with 3:33 on the clock. The Panthers scored eight of their remaining 14 points from the free throw line to coast to an 82-71 victory.

NYIT was led by sophomore Annette Johansen (Oslo, Norway) with a game-high 22 points. Senior Sonia Papdopoulou (Nicosia, Cyprus) had 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, December 14, traveling to the University of New Haven for a 7 pm match-up.
