Adelphi placed four players in double figures and shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, while holding Dowling to just 35 percent shooting to top the Golden Lions 81-71. With the win the Panthers remain unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the NYCAC, while Dowling falls to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Both teams searched for their offensive rhythm early, with Dowling moving out to a 12-11 lead with 13:40 to play on a bucket by Teelah Grimes (Middle Island, N.Y.). Then Adelphi and Dowling traded baskets before the Panthers used a quick 6-2 run to take a five point lead and control of the half.
Freshman Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) scored the last four points of the half to help Adelphi enter halftime with a seven point edge, 37-30.
The second half was more of the same as Adelphi used a 9-2 run to push their lead to 10 points, 46-36, with 18:03 to play. Dowling would get no closer then seven the rest of the way as the Panthers amassed a 16 point advantage on two occasions before finally collecting the win, 81-71.
Grimes paced Dowling, pouring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Teammates Tiffany Davis (Philadelphia, PA), Heini Suokari (Vanhalinna, Finland) and Laura Mullally (Athlone, Ireland) also scored in double figures. Davis and Suokari chipped in 12 points apiece while Mullally scored 17, all in the second half.
Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) led all scorers with a game-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Courtney Carpenter (Tom's River, N.J.) also had a strong game under the boards for Adelphi, scoring 13 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in 16 points, while Smith set new career-highs in points with 14 and rebounds with nine.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, December 3rd when they play host to visiting conference rival C.W. Post at 5:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
