The Eastern College Athletic Conference held their 2004 Division II Women's Volleyball Tournament at Post University Saturday. Adelphi won its semi-final match over St. Rose, 3-1, before falling to eventual winner the University of Bridgeport, 3-1.
The University of Bridgeport won both of their matches to win the tournament title. Jessica Herrman was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: #1 University of Bridgeport versus #3 Adelphi University
Bridgeport won the final match 3-1 (30-22, 30-32, 30-27, 30-22) over Adelphi. Amy Neussl (Juneau, AK) helped UB fend off a pesky Adelphi team. She had nine kills, 14 digs and eight blocks. Jessica Herrman (Salina, KS) added 13 kills and 28 digs. Jessica Bornack (Roselle, IL) also had a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Courtney Winsted (Red Bluff, CA) contributes 18 kills and 13 digs to go along with five blocks. Sinead Quirk (Wheaton, IL) had 46 assists.
For Adelphi, freshman Christina Vandling (Endicott, NY) had six blocks. Sophomore Rachael Cornick (Endicott, NY) had a team- high 15 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Brittany Addeo (Minden, NV) had 49 assists for the Panthers. Senior Sharon Ribera (Hollis Hills, NY) had a team-leading 20 digs.
UB lost in the first round of last year's ECACs. They finish the year at 20-9. This marked Adelphi first trip to the ECAC's as the squad finishes with a school record best 20-14 record.
SEMI-FINAL MATCH ONE: #1 University of Bridgeport versus #4 Post University
Bridgeport University defeated Post University 3-1 (32-34, 30-17, 30-28, 30-28) in the day's first affair.
Post, who has never defeated UB in fourteen tries, couldn't overcome the career-high 33 kills and 20 digs of MOP Herrman. Herrman hit .502 for the match. Bornack also had a double-double with 14 kills and 19 digs. Winsted completed the UB trio of double-doubles. She contributed 13 kills and 18 digs. Amy Neussl (Juneau, AK) had a team-high 24 digs and seven blocks. Quirk had 64 assists, a career high.
The Eagles were led by Tadj Williams (Albany, NY) who had 22 kills and 23 digs. Jennifer Giarratano (Seymour, CT) had 10 kills and 23 digs. Courtney McGinnis (Oxford, CT) added 45 assists and 12 digs. Angie Arcadi (Massena, NY) had a game-high 30 kills. Mia Wooten (Middletown, NY) had team high six blocks.
Post finished the season at 29-12. The 29 wins are the most in school history.
SEMI-FINAL MATCH TWO: #2 College of Saint Rose versus #3 Adelphi University
The day's second match was just as exciting as the first. Adelphi upset the defending ECAC Champions, Saint Rose, 3-1 (30-23, 34-32, 28-30, 30-27). Vandling tallied 15 kills and three blocks. Cornick had a team high 17 kills along with seven digs. Addeo collected 53 assists for the winners. Sophomore Deanna Maggio (Island Park, NY) had a team-high 10 digs.
Saint Rose (20-13) couldn't win back-to-back titles. The squad was led by the 18 kills and six digs of Stephanie Brink (Port Ewen, NY). Dana Pallatto (West Hempstead, NY) had 10 kills and three blocks. Alyssa Gosnell (Peru, NY) had 18 digs. Shannon Campbell (Charlton, NY) had 43 assists, eight digs, and six blocks.
