Adelphi Tops Concordia, 95-80

Garden City, N.Y. - Junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) recorded a career-high 26 points along with 13 rebounds to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 95-80 win over Concordia College on Saturday evening at Woodruff Hall.

The Panthers improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in NYCAC play. The Clippers drop to 0-2 and 0-1 in league action.

Hurdle led a balanced Panther attack which saw a total of four players in double figures. Senior Courtney Carpenter (Tom's River, N.J.) collected 17 points to go with a team-high 14 boards. Senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) also tallied 17 points, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, N.J.) was 5-of-5 from the field, chipping in a total 12 points on the night.

Adelphi held a 45-35 lead at the end of the first half with Hurdle and Carpenter leading the charge with 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Panthers led by as much as 14 points, 29-15, with 7:07 remaining in the half. The Clippers rallied on a 16-7 charge to close to within five, 36-29, with less than three minute to go. Mangone hit a three-pointer with :41 seconds remaining to cap a 8-2 run.

The Panthers came out strong in the second half, and kept the Clippers comfortably at bay for the opening 10 minutes. Adelphi seemed to find it stride as it saw its lead expand to 22 points, 91-69, with 4:33 left in regulation. Over the next 3:30 minutes, Concordia attempted a late rally as the Panthers were held scoreless from the field. But it was too little too late as Adelphi held on for the win, 95-80.

Concordia was led by junior Monique Mighty (Hackensack, N.J.) with a game-high 29 points. Junio Pam Karagiorgos (Norwalk, Conn.) had 23 points and 14 rebounds.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, November 23, traveling to Mercy College for a 5:30 p.m. match up.
