The Adelphi men's basketball team pulled to within five points with just 16 seconds left but could not get any closer, falling 61-54 to UMASS-Lowell. The loss drops Adelphi's record to 0-1 on the season, while the River Hawks improve to 1-0.
The game started off slowly with both teams combining for just four points in the first three minutes of action. Then things started to heat up with the lead changing hands four times in the next six minutes. The Panthers used a 13-0 run to take a tem point lead with 8:14 to play in the first.
The Panthers got three-pointers from Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.), Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Moustafa El Zanaty (Montreal, Canada) during the run. The River Hawks responded with a 10-2 run of their own to pull within two, 23-21 with 4:39 to play. Brandon Arnette (Lake Park, FL) led the charge scoring five of Lowell's ten points during the run.
The River Hawks to a brief lead before Mike Mosby (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) hit a bucket with just 29 seconds to play in the first to give the Panthers a 28-26 halftime edge.
Lowell opened the second half with a quick two points to pull even at 28. Then Lowell and Adelphi exchanged the lead twice before the River Hawks pull ahead by seven on the strength of a 7-0 run. The Panthers would pull as close as four on three occasions in the second half but could not get any closer, falling 61-54.
Stacey Moragne (Evanston, IL) led the River Hawks with 16 points and six rebounds. Teammate James Whyte (Vancouver, Canada) chipped in a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Panthers placed three players in double-digits led by Wagner who finished with 11 points. Aaron Cummings (Bay Shore, N.Y.) also finished with 11 points to go with a game-high seven assists and seven rebounds. James Samuels (Uniondale, N.Y.) rounded out Adelphi's offensive attack with 10 points.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, November 19th when they take on Merrimack in the first round of the Bentley Classic at 6:00 pm.
