The Adelphi women's basketball team defeated the Pace women, 76-75, on a layup by senior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, NY) with four seconds remaining on the clock. Pace opens the year at 0-1, while Adelphi will start 1-0.
With Pace leading, 73-67, senior Meranne Whitney (Nashua, NH) scored to cut the lead to 73-69. with 1:43 on the clock. After a missed layup by Jesse Dlabola (Levittown, NY), junior Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, NY) was fouled by Maria Brown (Frederick MD) with 1:15 on the clock. Hurdle would convert on one of two free throw attempts to cut the lead to three at 73-70.
Sophomore Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, NJ) then stole the ball from Dlabola and was fouled by Pace freshman Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY). After Mendieta also hit on one of two from the charity stripe , to cut the lead to 73-71 with 1:03 remaining, freshman Mary Lepore (Manhasset, NY) stole the ball from Ashley Wallace (Oswego, NY), who immediately fouled Lepore. Lepore hit on one of two as well, to cut the Setter lead to 73-72. Hurdle then stole the ball from Brown, who forced Hurdle to the line.
After Hurdle converted on both shots to give Adelphi a 74-73 lead, Pace senior co-captain Andrea Padelsky (Lebanon, PA) sank two free throws to give the Setters a 75-74 lead with 19 seconds to play.
Mangone's shot passed through the net with four seconds on the clock and the Setters now down, 76-75. The senior's was both improbable and incredible as she twisted threw the lane, switched hands and banged home a layup from the opposite side of the basket she started on. Brown took Pace's last shot of the game, a halfcourt pray that touched off the backboard and glanced off the rim as time expired.
Both team's battled to a 32-32 tie at halftime, with Jauna Andrews (Augusta, ME) dominating the inside as she scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds in the first frame. Padelsky scored 10 points in the first half to lead the Setter charge. For Adelphi, Hurdle scored nine points to keep Adelphi in the game.
In the second half, Brown took over for Pace, scoring 12 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out six assists in the second half alone. Brown would finish with 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in the game. Pace would finish with three players in double figures in scoring and three players pulling in double digit rebounds. Padelsky totaled 15 points while Andrews also turned in a double-double performance with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Wallace tallied eight points and pulled in 10 rebounds. Hannah Sheppard (Norwich, CT) finished with 10 points in nine rebounds in the loss.
For Adelphi, Whitney scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half, converted 11 of 11 free throw attempts. Hurdle would also finish in double figures, while also pulling in 11 rebounds and blocking three shots. Senior Courtney Carpenter (Brick, NJ) tallied nine points while also grabbing 10 caroms.
Overall, Pace outrebounded Adelphi, 56-42 and also dished out more assists, 16-7. Adelphi held the edge in turnovers, as the Setters turned the ball over 29 times to the Panthers' 15. Both team's shot in the low 30's for the game, with pace at 33.9% to Adelphi's 32.4%.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, November 20, hosting Concordia College in their season home-opener at Woodruff Hall. Tip-off is 7 pm.
