Adelphi won two more matches on Saturday at the Hawk Invitational to go unbeaten against the three teams they faced over the weekend. The Panthers have now won a school record six straight matches to improve to 12-9 on the season.
In the first round of games, Adelphi played three close sets against Southern New Hampshire and were able to come out at the end of each to win 3-0. Rachel Cornick (Endicott, N.Y./ Union Endicott) led all players with 12 kills and had 15 digs in the match to lead the way for Adelphi. Brittany Addeo (Minden, Nev./ Douglas) also had a double double for the Panthers with 33 assists and 13 digs. The Penmen were led by Colleen Eddy (Dracut, Mass./ Central Catholic) with 17 digs.
The other early match of the day went to a deciding fifth game. After falling behind 2-0 to Saint Anselm, Southampton rallied to win the next three games, each by only two points. Karissa Michel (Columbia City, Ind./ Canterbury) led the Colonials with a game high 21 kills and five service aces while Kelly Sprague (Wapinger Falls, N.Y./ R.C. Ketcham) had 49 assists and 14 digs in the win. The Hawks were led by Kathleen McCarthy (Quincy, Mass./ N. Quincy), who had 60 assists.
In the afternoon set, Adelphi again took care of business sweeping Southampton in commanding fashion, 30-17, 30-15, 30-9. Meaghan Joyce (Massapequa, N.Y./ Massapequa) led all players with 11 kills while Addeo chipped in 39 assists for the Panthers. Laura Smith (York, Pa./ Spring Grove) had 10 digs to lead the Colonials in the loss.
The Hawks and Penmen battled it out in the other afternoon game. Southern New Hampshire won games two and three, but Saint Anselm came back to force a fifth game. The Penmen went on a run with the score tied 9-9 to win the game 15-12 and the match 3-2. Eddy led the charge for the Penmen with 32 digs while Lise Laczek (Cheshire, Conn./ Cheshire) added 31 digs, seven kills and three blocks in the win. Aimee Young (W. Springfield, Mass./ W. Springfield) led all players with 23 kills and McCarthy had 67 assists in the Hawks' defeat.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, October 12, traveling to NYIT for a 7:00 p.m. conference match-up.
