Men's Soccer Drops Conference Opener To Howard, 1-0

Oct. 9, 2004

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The Panthers held an edge 10-0 edge in corner kicks and a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal but could not put one in the back of the Bison net, falling 1-0 to visiting Howard. The conference loss drops Adelphi to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC), while Howard rises to 2-5-2 overall and 1-0 in conference action.

The Panthers dominated the bulk of the first half action, but Howard made a couple of dangerous runs, coming up just short. The Bison's were forced to play a man down when Bode Akingbohungbe (Brampton, Ontario) received a red card. Despite the loss of a player Howard seemed to increase the pressure on Adelphi, breaking through in the 57th minute of play.

Brian Woodward (Greensboro, NC) slipped a ball through traffic in front of the Adelphi goal to a waiting Jonnie Bess (Stafford, VA). Bess collected the ball and slotted it into the lower right hand corner past a diving Rich Skoblicki (Patchogue, N.Y.), giving the Bison a 1-0 edge.

The Bison would slip past the Panther's on two more occasions for one-on-one encounters with Adelphi's goalkeeper, but Skoblicki was up to the task and turned both attacks away, keeping the Panthers close.

In the last five minutes Tal Sheinfeld (Even Yehoda, Israel) had a quality chance but was denied by Jason Williams (Warrick, Bermuda). Sophomore Ron Forman (Massapequa, N.Y.) ripped a shot that was turned away by Williams. The rebound landed at the feet of a charging Sheinfeld who struck the ball toward the lower left corner where Williams robbed Adelphi of what looked like a sure goal and preserved a 1-0 win.

Williams made seven saves for Howard, while Skoblicki collected two for Adelphi.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, October 16th when they play host to visiting Oneonta State at 12:00 pm on Stiles Field.
