Garden City, N.Y. -
Adelphi bounced back from their first conference loss since 2001 by blanking visiting Philadelphia 3-0. Senior Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) notched two goals and an assist in the victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the conference, while the Lady Rams fall to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Philadelphia opened the game strong and made several strong rushes at Adelphi's goal but could not get through the Panther defense. Then in the 28th minute sophomore Catherine Wyndham (Lynbrook, N.Y.) slipped into the Ram box with the ball and was taken down, giving Adelphi a penalty kick. Coiro converted the penalty kick, putting the Panthers up 1-0.
Just before the half Adelphi stretched their advantage to 2-0 when Coiro collected a pass from Kristin Waldman (East Meadow, N.Y.) and slipped it past Philadelphia keeper Lauri Cain (Pittsgrove, NJ).
Adelphi put the game out of reach 15 minutes into the second half when Coiro slotted a ball to Shannon McEntee (Valley Stream, N.Y.) on the Ram end line. McEntee moved toward the Philadelphia goal and sent it into the box on the ground, where it deflected off of a Ram defender and into the goal, pushing Adelphi's lead to 3-0.
Cain collected seven saves in the loss, while Christine Conway (Rockville Center, N.Y.) and Heather Munzer (Wantagh, N.Y.) each made one save for Adelphi.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, October 12th when they travel to Southampton, New York to take on #8 LIU-Southampton at 3:00 pm.
