Panthers Rally to Beat Hawks In Five

Manchester, N.H. - The first day of the Hawk Invitational kicked off with a bang with two exciting matches. The Hawks-Panthers game came down to the wire with both teams making comebacks to take momentum. After watching the Hawks (8-12) rally late to win the third set and go up two games to one, the Panthers (10-9) came back strong to win games four and five, taking the match 3-2.

Junior Meaghan Joyce (Massapequa, N.Y./ Massapequa) and sophomore Rachael Cornick (Endicott, N.Y./ Union Endicott) each had 15 kills to lead the charge by the Panthers, who improve to 10-9 on the season. Aimee Young (W. Springfield, Mass./ W. Springfield) led all players with a season high 19 kills for the Hawks and Kathleen McCarthy (Quincy, Mass./ N. Quincy) had a season high 62 assists as Saint Anselm falls to 8-12 on the season.

With last night's victory, the Panthers tied the school record for most consecutive wins with four straight.

In the other game of the night, Southern New Hampshire swept Southampton, 3-0. Deanna Guenther (Apollo, Pa./ Kiski Area) led all players with 11 kills, helping the Penmen to a win as they improve to 6-9 on the season. Karissa Michel (Columbia City, Ind./ Canterbury) led the Colonials with eight kills as they fall to 5-8 overall.

The Hawk Invitational will continue tomorrow with Southampton (5-8) facing Saint Anselm and Adelphi taking on Southern New Hampshire (6-9) at 11 a.m. The second round of the day will begin at 2 p.m. with the Penmen facing the Hawks and the Panthers taking on the Colonials.
