Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - The No. 18 ranked Adelphi University women's soccer team saw their win streak snapped at eight with a 1-0 conference loss to the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday afternoon at Stiles Field. The Purple Knights improve to 6-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play while the Panthers drop to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the NYCAC.

Although the Panthers held a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half, they were not able to connect with the back of the net. In the 35th minute, Bridgeport's Rut Bjarnadottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) fought through several Adelphi defenders before booting a shot into the left corner and past the arms of Adelphi goalkeeper Christine Conway. The Panthers trailed at the half, 1-0.

A determined Panthers squad played a more aggressive game in the second half. They continued to dominate on shots and also held a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks. Adelphi had several good attempts on goal, most stopped by UB goalie Allison Verobel (Washington Township, N.J.) who had eight saves on the day. Senior Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) and freshman Denise Auer (Holbrook, N.Y.) each had solid attempts on goal, with Coiro's best attempt in the 71st minute of play which hit off the crossbar.

Today's loss marked the second time this season the Panthers have trailed at the half. The first was a 2-0 loss against Southern Connecticut.

This is Adelphi's first loss against Bridgeport since their series start in 2000. The Panthers are now 4-1 against the Purple Knights.

Adelphi returns to conference action on Saturday, October 9, hosting Philadelphia University at 2 p.m. The game is the second in a doubleheader with the men's soccer team hosting Howard University at 12 p.m. as part of Adelphi Homecoming Weekend
