Panthers Ground Lady Flyers in Five Game Thriller

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team rebounded from a 10-0 deficit in game five to rally to a 30-26, 24-30, 30-14, 31-33, 17-15 conference victory over Mercy College on Tuesday night at Woodruff Hall. This marks the Panthers first win over the Lady Flyers in program history.

Sophomore Rachel Cornick, one of four players in double figures, registered 22 kills and 17 digs. Senior Sharon Ribera collected a career-best 28 digs and sophomore Brittany Addeo tied her career best of 59 assists.

Adelphi hit .250 in game one compared with .070 for Mercy to rally to an early 30-26 lead. The Lady Flyers were much improved in game two, connected on 16 of 41 swings to tie the match at 1-all.

The Panthers took game three in convincing fashion, with just two errors on 29 attacks for a .483 hitting percentage. It appeared Adelphi would also take game four, however Mercy closed to tie at 28-28. Both teams traded points but the Lady Flyers pulled ahead, 33-31, forcing a fifth game.

Mercy took charge in game five, exploding on a 10-0 run. Not to be outdone, the Panthers roared back closing on a 14-4 run. Tied at 14-14, Adelphi continued its rally capped by a kill from freshman Christina Vandling kill who totaled 15 on the night. She also had a hand in eight of the team's 11 blocks.

Tonight's victory was the first for the Panthers over the Lady Flyers in 18 meetings dating back to 1992. Adelphi improves to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in the NYCAC, while Mercy drops to 8-9 and 2-3 in the NYCAC.

Adelphi returns to action this weekend, participating in the St. Anslem Tournament beginning this Friday, October 8.
