Garden City, N.Y. -
Junior Shannon McEntee (Valley Stream, N.Y.) scored the game-winner in the 59th minute and senior Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) added an insurance goal minutes later as the Adelphi University women's soccer team topped Southern New Hampshire University, 2-0. The Panthers improve to 13-3 on the season, while the Penmen drop to 6-9-3.
Most of the first half action took place in the midfield and both teams battled back and forth. The Panthers held a 7-3 advantage on shots but were unable to connect with the back of the net.
McEntee put the Panthers on board in the second half. She raced down the left side of the field and beat out several SNHU defenders before chipping the ball over the head of Penmen goalie Jessica Langley (Norwich, CT) at 58:52. In the 63rd minute, a handball call against SNHU gave the Panthers a penalty kick. Coiro blasted the ball into the right corner to give Adelphi a 2-0 lead.
The contest became more physical in the second half with a total of 12 fouls and four cautions handed out. The Adelphi defense held the Penmen to just three shots in the half. Freshman Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had two stops on the day for her eighth shutout of the season. Langley had five saves for SNHU.
Adelphi returns to conference action on Saturday, October 28, hosting Molloy College at 2 pm. As part of "Senior Day" the graduating class of 2005 will be recognized before the start of the game.
