Freshman Christina Vandling's (Endicott, N.Y.) nine kills led a balanced Panther attack as the Adelphi volleyball team topped Bloomfield 30-8, 30-15, 30-19 this Saturday afternoon at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 8-9 while the Deacons drop to 4-11.
Sophomore Rachael Cornick (Endicott, N.Y.) had eight kills and three digs. Senior Sharon Ribera (Hollis Hills, N.Y.) collected a team-high 10 kills and four aces.
Adelphi jumped out to an early 12-2 lead helped by a .391 hitting percentage in game one. The Panthers coasted to a 30-8 win.
In game two, junior Jessica Haynes (Tampa, Fl.) provided three straight service aces to open a quick 4-1 lead for the Panthers. The Deacons managed to tie the game, 5-5, but Adelphi rallied on an 11-5 run to pull away and hold on for the win 30-15.
Game three remained close with Bloomfield realizing its first lead of the match off a Michelle Peters (Newark, N.J.) attack, 9-8. Down by two, Panthers fought back on a 6-1 run to retake the lead, 14-11. Sophomore Brittany Addeo (Minden, NV) had three of her match-high five aces in the run. Both teams fought back and forth with the game tying for the fourth time at 17-17. Adelphi pulled ahead, outscoring Bloomfield 13-2 to win the game and the match, 30-19.
The Deacons were led by Megan Dalrymple (Bloomfield, N.J.) with 11 kills and 10 digs.
The Panthers totaled a season-best 19 service aces in the victory. With eight wins this season, Adelphi has already matched its win total from 2003 when they finished 8-17.
Adelphi returns to conference action on Tuesday, October 5, hosting Mercy College at 7:00 p.m.
