Men's Soccer Tops Manhattan In Double Overtime, 3-2

Oct. 2, 2004

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Freshman Andrew Worth (Gray, Maine) scored the game winner 36 seconds into the second overtime to lift Adelphi to a 3-2 non-conference win over visiting Manhattan. The win raises Adelphi's record to 3-4 overall, while Manhattan drops to 1-6 on the season.

Manhattan controlled the opening minutes of action but Adelphi broke through first. Sophomore Dieudonne Nonga (Jamaica, N.Y.) pushed the ball down the right flank and sent a cross into the Jasper box. Rob Philippou (Manhasset, N.Y.) was waiting at the back post and headed the ball into an open net to give Adelphi a 1-0 advantage.

The Panthers could not hold the lead for long as Joe Pumo (Oceanside, N.Y.) carried the ball to the corner of Adelphi's box before giving it up to teammate Josh Swett (Edmonds, WA). Swett attacked the Panther goal and was intercepted by two Adelphi defenders who knocked the ball free but were not able to clear the ball. Swett collected the ball and beat Panther goalie Rich Skoblicki (Patchogue, N.Y.) to knot the game at one.

Just under five minutes later Steven Heisler (Deer Park, N.Y.) struck a ball toward Manhattan's goal, Collin Leaver (Encinitas, CA) came up with the save but gave up a rebound. Ron Forman (Massapequa, N.Y.) corralled the rebound and slotted the ball into an open net, giving Adelphi a 2-1 edge at the half.

The second half was back and forth until Swett scored his second goal of the contest. Javier Escobedo (Ramona, CA) sent the ball into Adelphi's box where Swett was able to touch it into the Panther goal, tying the contest at two.

Neither team could push their advantage and the game moved into overtime. Just 36 seconds into the second overtime Worth moved down the right flank and sent the ball into the Jasper box on the ground. The ball deflected off of a Manhattan defender and into the goal, giving Adelphi a 3-2 overtime victory.

Skoblicki picked up the win for Adelphi and collected five saves, Leaver came up with six stops for Manhattan.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, October 6th when they play host to visiting Lehigh in the second game of a five game home stand. Kick-off is set for 4:00 pm on Stiles field.
