Volleyball Tops Philadelphia In Three Sets

Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore Rachael Cornick registered 18 kills along with 18 digs for her fifth double-double of the season to lead Adelphi University to a 30-17, 30-25, 30-19 conference victory over Philadelphia University on Thursday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 13-10 and 4-3 in the NYCAC while the Rams drop to 13-7 and 1-5 in league play.

Freshman Lauren Flanagan chipped in ten kills and three blocks. Junior Meaghan Joyce and senior Sharon Ribera each added 10 digs.

The Panthers cruised to a quick 1-0 lead, hitting .382 in game one versus .050 for visiting Philadelphia. Despite improved hitting in game two by Adelphi, PhilaU kept things close. Tied for the six time of the set at 9-all, Adelphi rallied on a 4-0 run to lead 13-10. The Panthers maintained a five-point lead for the remainder of the game to win, 30-25.

Adelphi jumped to a quick 11-6 lead in game three. The Panthers saw its lead extend to 23-13 capped by a service ace from sophomore Deanna Maggio. The Rams answered with three unanswered points, but were unable to sustain the rally. Adelphi coasted to a 30-19 victory.

The Rams were led by Emily Krauss with 14 kills and 11 digs.

Adelphi returns to action next Tuesday, October 19, traveling to Jamaica, NY to face Queens College. Game time is 7:00 pm.
