The Adelphi University volleyball team saw their six-game win streak come to an end at the hands of top-ranked NYIT, 30-26, 30-18, 30-26. The Panthers fall to 12-10 overall and 3-3 in the NYCAC.
Sophomore Racheal Cornick had 13 kills on 27 swings with just four errors to lead Adelphi. She also recorded nine digs. Junior Meaghan Joyce was also in double figures with 10 kills along with five digs.
Adelphi played a strong first game, hitting .360 compared with .148 for NYIT, but were unable to close for the win. The Bears improved in game two, connecting for 17 kills on 31 attempts to outscore the Panthers 30-18. NYIT pulled away in game three for the victory, 30-26.
"We never got into a rhythm on serve-receive and struggled on defense most of the night," said coach Joe Chojnacki. "It was a disappointing way to lose because we know we can play with them. Rachael and Meaghan played well but we never established our middle game. Tech's Burcu Hakyemez certainly is one of the best players in our conference and showed it last night. I have to give them a lot of credit, they took it right to us."
Hakyemez led all players with 22 kills and 17 digs.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, October 14, hosting Philadelphia University at 7:00 pm. Admission is $1 for the game and those attending will receive preferred entry into Woodruff Hall for the Midnight Madness Celebration beginning at 10:30 pm.
