Adelphi Edged by Queens, 71-69

Flushing, N.Y. - Despite four players in double figures and a career-best 18 points from sophomore Ben Kenyon, the Adelphi men's basketball was edged by Queens College, 71-69, Tuesday night at Fitzgerald Gym. The Panthers fall to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the NYCAC, while the Knights improve to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the NYCAC.

Sophomore Jamaal Wagner had 15 points, going 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, along with eight rebounds. Seniors Thomas McCormack and Dwayne Thompson added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Adelphi shot a sizzling 55.2 percent from the field in the first half, connecting on 5-of-9 from three-point range. The Panthers held a 20-12 lead through the 12:10 mark. The AU defense clamped down on the Knights, allowing just two field goals over the next eight minutes. Adelphi held a 38-32 advantage going into the intermission.

The Knights dominated the second half, hitting 11-of-22 from the field, while the Panthers dropped to just 33 percent (8-of-24). Queens outscored Adelphi 17-11 to tie the game, 49-49, with 10:19 on the clock. The Knights continued its run, pulling open a 58-51 lead over the next 2:30 minutes. The Panthers clawed back, closing to within one point on a basket by Kenyon with 1:44 left in the contest. Queens scored five of its final seven points from the charity stripe to hold on for the win.

The Knights held a 36-28 advantage on the boards, while also taking advantage of seven unforced Adelphi turnovers.

Queens was led by junior John Sikiric with 20 points, 5-of-7 from three-point range. Senior Gary DeBerry added 17 points.

The Panthers are back in action this Saturday, traveling to the University of Bridgeport. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
