The Adelphi women's basketball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end with a tough overtime loss at Queens College, 73-69, on Tuesday night at Fitzgerald Gym. The Panthers drop to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the NYCAC. The Lady Knights pick up their first win in three contests to improve to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the NYCAC.
Three players scored in double figures for the Panthers led by senior Jamie Douglas with 12 points and eight rebounds. Juniors Melanie Mangone and Meranne Whitney each added 11 points.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 12-7 lead before the Lady Knights rallied back to tie the game, 14-14, at the 9:30 mark. Queens would take the lead on a lay-up by junior Katie Brown who had 12 points in the game. Adelphi responded on a 9-3 run capped by a three-point basket from Mangone to lead 25-21 with 4:10 remaining. The Lady Knights outscored Adelphi 13-4 over the final minutes to hold a 34-29 advantage at the end of the half.
Queens realized its largest lead the night, 37-29, as Erin Dollard drained a three-pointer to open the second half. Over the next four minutes, Adelphi rattled off seven unanswered points and would eventually tie the game, 41-41, on two made free throws by sophomore Carlyshia Hurdle. The Panthers led by as much as five points with 12:10 remaining, after a three-pointer by senior Kerri Kirschbaum, 50-45. The Lady Knights fought back to tie the game for the fourth time, 54-54, at 9:49. The Panthers quickly found themselves trailing by six with 3:45 on the clock. Junior Laura Phillips, who had a team-high 10 rebounds, accounted for four of the final Adelphi points to force the overtime.
Kirschbaum opened the extra mintues with a 3-pt field goal to give Adelphi the advantage at 3:40. This would prove to be the only field goal for the Panthers. Queens finished the game on a 7-0 run despite hitting just 5-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Adelphi held a 54-47 advantage on the boards, but continues to be plagued by turnovers, committing 25 in the contest.
The Lady Knights were led by junior Shonda Holder with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Panthers return to conference action this Saturday, traveling to the University of Bridgeport. Tip off is 1:00 p.m.
