Adelphi Women Down NYIT, 77-48

Garden City, N.Y. - Freshman Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, N.J.) led a balanced Panther attack, pouring in a career-high 17 points, along with five assists and five steals as the Adelphi University women's basketball team defeated NYIT, 77-48. Adelphi extends its win streak to three, improving to 12-6 overall and 11-4 in the NYCAC. The Lady Bears fall to 4-13 on the season and 4-11 in the NYCAC.

The Panthers opened the contest on a 19-2 run and never looked back. Sophomore Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) collected 14 of her 16 points in the first half, along with a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Jamie Douglas added 12 points. Adelphi opened its lead to 23-4 with 7:52 remaining in the half. NYIT managed to close to within 10 points on an 11-2 run at 2:55. But the Panthers pulled open a comfortable 33-17 lead at the half.

Adelphi continued to dominate in the second half. Junior Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in 11 of her 13 points in the half. The Panthers hit 20-of-34, or 58.8 percent, in the half to lead by as much as 35 points.

Led by senior Georgia Gordon's (St. Ann, Jamaica) game-high 15 rebounds, NYIT held a 51-43 advantage on the boards. She also had a team-high 15 points. Senior Lindsay Klimkowski (Syosset, N.Y.) had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Adelphi will next travel to NYIT for another conference match-up this Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
