The Adelphi University men's basketball defeated Molloy College, 75-54, in a midweek conference match-up at Woodruff Hall. Sophomore Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) recorded 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for the Panthers as they improve to 11-6 overall and 9-5 in the NYCAC. The Lions drop their third straight to fall to 6-11 on the season and 6-8 in the conference.
Snowy weather didn't seem to have any effect on the Panthers who shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half. The Lions struggled against a tough Adelphi defense, connecting on just 5-of-22, or 22.7 percent, in the half. Sophomore Taylor Murphy (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) and senior Dwayne Thompson (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) each chipped in eight of their ten points in the first half. Adelphi dominated on boards, outrebounding Molloy 23-11. A basket by senior Thomas McCormack (Breezy Point, N.Y.) at 3:27 gave the Panthers a 20 point lead, 33-13, which they maintained into the second half.
The Panthers extended their lead to 23 points in the opening minutes of the second half. The Lions started to chip away at the Adelphi lead going on a 19-7 run to close to within 11 points, 48-37, with 10:31 remaining. The Panthers followed with nine unanswered points en route to a 20-8 run over the next seven minutes. Adelphi coasted to a 74-54 victory.
On the night, Adelphi was 50 percent from the field and held a 45-31 advantage on rebounds.
Molloy was led by senior Leon Merritt (St. Alban's, N.Y.) with 13 points and four rebounds. Junior Andwele Murray (Westbury, N.Y.) had a team-high 10 rebounds along with six points.
Adelphi continues its three-game home stand this Saturday, January 31, hosting NYIT at 7:30 p.m. This is also Alumni Day with events kicking off at 1:00 p.m. The women's game will be played first, followed by the men at 3:00 p.m. Alumni will be honored at half-time of each game.
