Adelphi Women Roll Past Molloy, 88-69

Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi shot 54 percent from the field and scored a season-high 88 points in their 88-69 victory over Molloy College. The Panthers also got an outstanding performance from junior Laura Phillips (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) who poured in a career-high 20 points and grabbed five rebounds. With the win Adelphi improves to 11-6 overall and 10-4 in conference play, while Molloy falls to 5-12 overall and 4-10 in the NYCAC.

The first half opened with the game going back and forth, Molloy claimed their third lead of the half on a jumper by Rose Bruno (Staten Island, N.Y.) with 14:01 to play. But Adelphi responded with an 8-2 run that was closed by Phillips, who knocked down two free throws to give Adelphi a 19-15 edge.

The Panthers would not trail the rest of the way and extended their lead to nine points at the half with a 10-4 run.

The second half was more of the same, with Adelphi extending their lead to as much as 28 points on two occasions. Molloy battled back to close to 15 with 46 seconds left, but Adelphi scored four straight points to walk away with a 19 point win, 88-69.

Phillips paced the Panthers, who had five players in double figures. Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) and Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) both scored 14, Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, N.J.) scored 12 and Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) contributed 10 points. Douglas led Adelphi with a game-high seven boards.

Molloy placed four players in double-figures in the losing effort. Bruno led the Lions with 12, while Elizabeth Fryer (Bellerose, N.Y.) scored 11 and Brandi D'Amico (Levittown, N.Y.) and Francesca Romano (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) each chipped in with 10. D'Amico also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

The Panthers return to action Saturday, January 31st, when they play host to visiting NYIT at 5:30 pm in Woodruff Hall. January 31st is also Alumni Day; events will be kicking off at 1:00 pm, starting with the women's and men's alumni basketball games.
