Freshman Kimani Blaize (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went on a 9-0 run by himself to give the Panthers a 61-56 lead. C.W. Post made a small run to pull to within one point, but that was as close as they got. Adelphi's win snaps the Pioneers eight game conference win streak and drops C.W. Post to 12-4 overall and 10-4 in the conference, while the Panthers improve 10-6 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
Adelphi came out strong and claimed an early 4-0 lead, but the Pioneers responded and grabbed a 10 point lead with 7:30 remaining in the first half on a made free throw by Gerry McNair (Valley Cottage, N.Y.). The Panthers managed to claw their way back into the game just before the half, outscoring C.W. Post 10-7 over the final four minutes to pull to within five, 33-28, at the half.
The game stayed tight in the second half, the Pioneers were unable to extend their lead beyond six. C.W. Post extended their lead to six with 12:11 left to play but Eric Martin (Laurelton, N.Y.) hit a jumper to pull Adelphi back to within four. C.W. Post again extended their lead from one to three with 7:19 to play on a jumper by Rueben Statam (Grand Chain, I.L.), but Martin hit a free throw to pull the Panthers back to within two.
Then Blaize went on a 9-0 run of his own. Blaize hit three three-pointers in a row, all on assists from Thomas McCormack (Breezy Point, N.Y.) to give the Panthers a 61-56 edge with 4:48 on the clock. The Pioneers answered with a run of their own that was capped by McNair, who hit two free throws to bring C.W. Post as close as one point, 61-60.
But the Panthers hit six free throws down the stretch to ice the game for Adelphi and hand C.W. Post their first loss in their last nine games. Blaize led Adelphi in scoring with a game-high 15 points, including hitting four of five from beyond the arc. Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, N.Y.) also chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds.
C.W. Post was led by Justin Cole (Westbury, N.Y.) who scored a team-high 14 points. McNair scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in the losing effort.
Adelphi returns to action Wednesday, January 28th when they play host to visiting Molloy College at 7:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
