Senior Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, N.J.) poured in 12 of her game-high 20 points in the second half as they Adelphi University women's basketball team defeated conference foe C.W. Post, 68-60. The Panthers improve to 10-6 overall and 9-4 in the NYCAC, while the Lady Pioneers drop their second straight to fall to 7-8 on the season and 6-8 in the league.
Also in double figures for the Panthers was sophomore Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) with 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior Laura Phillips (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds along with 10 points for the double-double.
Adelphi jumped out to an early 14-2 run in the opening minutes of play. Post answered on a 17-4 run to take the lead, 19-18, at 10:43. The Lady Pioneers extended their lead to 11, connecting on three straight three-point baskets. The Panthers rallied back, outscoring Post 14-3 over the final seven minutes. Junior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) hit a jumper with :03 seconds remaining to tie the game, 34-34. Post's Noelle Mitchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) hit both free throws to give the visitors the lead going into intermission, 36-34
Both teams came out strong in the second half. Over the first eleven minutes, the game tied four times with three lead changes. With the game tied at 48-48, Douglas rattled off six of the next eight Adelphi points as the Panthers took the lead for good. A late surge by Post brought them to within one point, 57-56, with 2:48 on the clock. But Adelphi outscored Post 9-4 over the final minutes for the win.
On the game, Adelphi held a 48-41 advantage on boards and forced 29 turnovers. The Panthers also recorded a season best 18 steals in the win.
Post was led by Keona Dessau (Philadelphia, PA) with 16 points and eight rebounds. Thalia Jackson (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Sheila Jackson (Freeport, N.Y.) added 12 points a piece.
