Sophomore Carylshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) registered ten of her team-high 16 points in the second half to lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 71-57 win over Queens College on Tuesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 8-5 overall and 7-3 in the NYCAC while the Lady Knights drop to 7-7 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
Junior Laura Phillips (Plattsburgh, N.J.) was 6-of-9 from the floor for 13 points. Senior Kerri Kirschbaum (Leonardo, N.J.) added 11 points along with six rebounds and four steals.
After a slow start, the Panthers used a 19-5 run to pull open a comfortable ten point lead. The Lady Knights, shooting just 31 percent, were unable to close the gap. The Panthers had five steals in the first half, forcing 12 Lady Knights' turnovers. Adelphi shot 46.9 percent to hold onto a 38-25 lead going into intermission.
Adelphi continued to dominate in the second half, holding Queens to just five points over the first five minutes. The Panthers realized its largest lead of the night, 48-30, on a jumper by Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, N.J.). She had nine points on the night. Queens pulled to within nine on an 11-2 run, only to have the Panthers pull away again. Adelphi held on for the win, 71-57.
On the night, both teams struggled from three-point range with Adelphi hitting 1-of-9, compared with 0-14 for Queens. Both teams tied at 42 rebounds apiece.
Queens was led by junior Shonda Holder (Uniondale, N.Y.) with a game-high 17 points and ten rebounds.
Adelphi returns to conference action this Thursday, January 22, hosting Concordia College at 5:30 p.m.
