Despite four players scoring in double figures, the Adelphi women's basketball team suffered it first-ever recorded loss to Concordia College, 79-63, this Saturday afternoon. The Panthers drop to 7-5 on the season and 6-3 in the NYCAC. The Lady Clippers improve to 5-8 overall and 5-5 in the NYCAC.
Junior Laura Phillips (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) lead the team with 14 points. Senior Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, N.J.) had 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior Meranne Whitney (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, N.J.) added 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Lady Clippers jumped out to an early 9-2 lead over the first four minutes of play. The Panthers rallied back to close to within one on two made free throws by Mendieta. Concordia answered on a 7-0 run to lead 14-8 at 12:55. Adelphi rattled off the next seven points, capped by a jumper from junior Tamarra Richardson (Brockton, Mass.) to tie the game, 14-14, with less than 11 minutes remaining in the half. The Panthers continued on a 10-2 run, to open a 24-16 lead at 5:15. Adelphi held on to a 33-30 lead going into intermission.
Concordia quickly tied the game on a three-pointer by Katie Reynolds to open the half. Senior Kerri Kirschbaum (Leonardo, N.J.) pulled the Panthers ahead on a matching three-point basket. This would prove to be the last Adelphi lead, as Concordia shot 69 percent from the field in the second half. After opening an 18-point Concordia lead, 60-42, with 8:10 on the clock, Adelphi pulled to within nine on a 12-4 run. The Lady Clippers, who hit 80 percent from three-point land, quickly pulled away, realizing their biggest lead, 76-57, with less than a minute to play.
A total of four Lady Clippers scored in double figures, led by Reynolds with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Pam Karagiorgios had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Adelphi returns to conference action this Tuesday, January 20, hosting Queens College at 5:30 p.m.
