Women Top Dowling, 80-72

Garden City, N.Y. - Senior Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, N.J.) poured in 14 of her team-high 22 points in the first half as the Adelphi University women's basketball team defeated Dowling College, 80-72, Wednesday night at Woodruff Hall. The Panthers improve to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the NYCAC, while the Lions fall to 5-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play.

Senior Kerri Kirschbaum (Leonardo, N.J.) registered a season-best 16 points, including 5-of-8 from the field, to go along with six assists. Junior Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, N.Y.) added 14 points and seven rebounds. Douglas led all players with a game-high eight rebounds.

The Panthers jumped out to a quick lead outscoring the Golden Lions, 18-10, over the first 11 minutes of play. Dowling responded on a 6-2 run to close to within two, 20-18, at 8:07. Freshman Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, N.J.) scored four of her nine points, sparking a 13-5 run. Adelphi realized its largest lead of the half, 38-25, on a three-point field goal by Mangone with 1:58 remaining. The Panthers hit an impressive 17-of-32 from the field, or 53.1 percent, to end the half with a 38-27 advantage.

Both teams came out strong in the second half, trading baskets over the first five minutes of play. After opening up a 53-39 lead, the Panthers stalled, missing their next six attempts. Dowling took advantage, going on an 11-2 run to close to 55-50 at 9:26. Kirschbaum drained a three-point basket as the Panthers responded outscoring the Golden Lions 16-6. With 6:21 remaining, Adelphi enjoyed its largest lead of the night, 71-56. Despite a late surge by Dowling senior Zulmary Andino (Valle, Puetro Rico) who scored all ten of her team's final points, Adelphi held on for the win, 80-72.

Andino led all players with a game-high 25 points. She also had six assists and six steals. Senior Jackie Lukas (East Northport, N.Y.) had 15 points and four rebounds.

On the game, Adelphi shot a season-best 49.2 percent from the field and held a 42-35 advantage on rebounds.

Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, January 17, traveling to Concordia College. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
