Adelphi made just seven of 22 attempts from the foul line on their way to falling to Bridgeport 61-50. The Panthers converted just 31 percent of their free throws, while Bridgeport hit on 22 of 28 attempts. With the loss the Panthers fall to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the NYCAC, while Bridgeport improves to 8-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
Both teams came out struggling, combining for just one basket and two points in the first three minutes of action. But then Bridgeport went on a 19-5 run that lasted more then seven minutes and gave the Purple Knights a 23-9 edge with 8:09 left to play in the first half. Then both teams went cold again, scoring just one basket in the next four minutes of action.
That drought was broken when Jamaal Wagner (Jamaica, NY) hit a three-pointer to pull Adelphi to 23-14. The Panthers used physical play to get back into the contest and closed the gap to 27-23 going in to the half.
The Panthers pulled even with Bridgeport early in the second half on another three-pointer by Wagner, but the Purple Knights answered back with a three of their own to take a 35-32 advantage. Adelphi would stay close most of the half but Bridgeport pulled away with their free throw shooting, hitting 14 of 19 attempts in the second half, while Adelphi converted just five of 13.
Wagner led Adelphi with 13 points, and Eric Martin (Laurelton, NY) chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds. Bridgeport's Gabe Inglis (St. Lucia, NY) led all scores with 19 points and added 10 rebounds. Teammate Gordon James (Brooklyn, NY) collected 13 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.
The Panthers return to action Wednesday, January 14th when they play host to Dowling College at 7:30 pm.
