Adelphi Tops Bridgeport In Overtime, 74-68

Bridgeport, CT - Adelphi bounced back from an overtime loss to Queens College on Thursday with an overtime win at Bridgeport, 74-68. Adelphi's free throw shooting in overtime proved to be the difference as the Panthers converted seven of ten attempts in the extra period to come away with the win. With the win Adelphi improves to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in NYCAC play, while Bridgeport falls to 1-10 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

Adelphi jumped out to a 38-31 halftime lead, sparked by 12 point first half performances from Jamie Douglas (Hopatcong, NJ) and Melanie Mangone (Middle Village, NY). The difference in the first half proved to be free throws; Adelphi converted five of ten attempts from the line, while Bridgeport had no free throw attempts.

In the second half Bridgeport held the Panthers to just 23 points, while scoring 30 of their own to force overtime. The Panthers shot just 23 percent in the second half and the Purple Knights hit 40 percent of their shots. In the overtime Adelphi took over, getting to the free throw line 10 times in the extra period. The Panthers shot 60 percent from the field and 70 percent from the foul line in overtime to come away with a 74-68 victory.

Douglas led Adelphi with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds, Laura Phillips (Plattsburgh, NY) chipped in with a double-double, 11 points and 12 rebounds. Cherhara Shields (Woodland, CA) led Bridgeport with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Meghan Mills (Hartland, WI) grabbed a game-high 18 boards to go along with 10 points.

Adelphi returns to action Wednesday, January 14th when they play host to conference foe Dowling College at 5:30 pm.
