Panthers Fall to West Alabama and Eckerd College at Argonaut Invitational

Pensacola, Florida - On the first day of the Argonaut Invitational the Adelphi women's volleyball team fell to the University of West Alabama this afternoon 3-1, and then lost a tough match to the Eckerd College Tritons. The matches took place in Pensacola, Florida at the University of West Florida, where the Panthers are currently competing in Argonaut Invitational.

In the first match the Panthers lost the first and second games to West Alabama, 30-26 and 30-20. But Adelphi came back to take the third game from the Tigers 30-25, before losing the fourth game and the match, 30-12.

Freshman Rachael Cornick (Endicott, N.Y.) led the Panthers with 10 kills, while sophomore Deanna Maggio (Island Park, N.Y.) and freshman Meaghan Joyce (Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded six kills apiece. Maggio paced Adelphi with a total of 21 digs, and Joyce totaled 16 digs on the afternoon. Freshman Julie Roke (Chesire, Conn.) led the team in service aces with a total of three.

In the second game of the day the Panthers took on the Eckerd College Tritons, Adelphi fell to a strong Triton team 3-0. Adelphi lost a close first game 30-26, and kept the pressure on in the second game but fell two games behind by a score of 30-22. The Tritons took the last game from the Panthers 30-17.

Meaghan Joyce led the Panther attack with six kills, while Sharon Ribera (Hollis Hills, N.Y.), Rachael Cornick, Kelly Campbell (Hicksville, N.Y.), and Julie Roke contributed five kills each. Deanna Maggio and Cornick each recorded seven digs, and Ribera totaled six for the match.

The Panthers are 0-2 on the season, while the Tritons improve to 5-1 and the Tigers of West Alabama improve to 4-2. Adelphi takes on Southern Arkansas today to 1 pm.
