Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi Panthers over powered the Highlanders of New Jersey Tech by a score of 6-0 this afternoon on Stiles Field. Adelphi out shot the Highlanders 21-1 over the course of the game and the Panther goalies never really saw much action as freshmen Calogero Carollo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Peter Ruff (Bethpage, N.Y.) combined with senior Tom Cunningham (Farmingdale, N.Y.) for the shutout.
The first half saw Adelphi put a lot of pressure on the New Jersey Tech defense as they took 11 shots in the half. Just over two minutes into the game senior Marlon McEachnie (Trinidad, West Indies) got a head on a brilliant cross from senior Matt Sether (Garden City, N.Y.) and put it past a diving New Jersey Tech goalie to open the scoring. Then in the 13th minute McEachnie put another ball into the back of the Highlander goal, after his first attempt was saved by Jason Manzi (Willingford, Conn.) McEachnie touched the rebound into the net for his second goal of the afternoon.
Padraig Drew a sophomore from Dublin, Ireland closed out the scoring in the first half when he collected a through ball from senior Marlon Clarke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and beat the keeper with a well placed strike that hit the left side netting. New Jersey Tech never really threatened in the first half but got solid midfield play from senior Cherno Cham (Banjul, Gambia).
The second half was more of the same with the Panthers continuing to dominate the action. Adelphi took a total of 10 shots in the second half. Junior Tal Sheinfeld (Even Yehoda, Israel) opened the scoring in the 63rd minute when he received a ball from senior Dean Marinello (Edinburgh, Scotland) and beat the keeper. Drew notched his second goal of the game just minutes later when graduate student Joe Afful (Brooklyn, N.Y.) played him a ball on the right wing, which Drew chipped over the goalie and into the back of the net.
In the 67th minute Sheinfeld closed out the scoring for the game when he collected a perfect cross from Drew and slipped it past a sprawling Highlander goalie. Manzi and sophomore Rene Cevallos combined to total four saves, while the Adelphi keepers had just one on the afternoon.
With the win Adelphi improves to 1-0-1 and New Jersey Tech falls to 0-0-1. The Panthers travel to South Orange, New Jersey on Wednesday to take on the Pirates of Seton Hall at 3 pm. Adelphi returns home on the 13th, to take on the Syracuse Orangemen at 1 pm on Stiles Field.
