Adelphi and Iona Play To A Scoreless Tie

Sept. 3, 2003

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Iona College and Adelphi University played to a scoreless tie over the course of hundred and ten minutes on a rain soaked Stiles Field. Iona left Garden City with a record of 1-1-1 while Adelphi improved to 0-0-1 after completing their first game of the season. It was a very physical affair that saw a total of 46 fouls and seven yellow cards, Adelphi received four cautions while Iona totaled three. Freshman Calogero Carollo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded six saves in his first game at Stiles Field, while opposing keeper Patrick McAllen (Washingtonville, N.Y.) came away with ten saves on the day.

The Panthers and Gaels played an up and down game for most of the first two halves with Adelphi coming away with some outstanding scoring opportunities. In the 38th minute junior Tal Sheinfeld (Even Yehoda, Israel) had back-to-back attempts at the goal, on the first attempt Sheinfeld struck a ball that beat the keeper but hit the post. On the rebound Sheinfeld was about a foot and a half out and placed the ball wide of the goal.

Late in the second half the Panthers had another excellent opportunity to put one away, sophomore Padraig Drew (Dublin, Ireland) used some amazing foot work and ball skills to slide past an Iona defender. Drew then struck a ball to senior Marlon Clarke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who collected the ball turned and looked to have the goalie beat, but McAllen made an outstanding diving stop to save the goal. The two overtimes saw both teams make runs at their respective goals but neither team was able to get one past the goalies.

Several Iona attacks were stifled by senior Gary Sullivan (West Islip, N.Y.) who seemed to win every ball in the air and played solid on the ground as well. Junior Marcos Monteagudo (Harrison, N.Y.), and freshman Ryan Reyes (Astoria, N.Y.) lead the Gaels with four shots apiece. While Clarke lead the Panthers with seven shots, followed closely by graduate student Joseph Afful (Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Adelphi returns to action this Saturday, September 6, against New Jersey Institute of Technology at 1:00 pm on Stiles Field.
