Sept. 21, 2003

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi topped Manhattan today in the second half of a double header 3-0. In the first game the women's team beat Bloomsburg 3-1. The win was senior Tom Cunningham's first career shutout and moves his season record to 3-0, while the Panthers improve to 4-1-1 on the year. With the loss Manhattan drops to 1-5.

Adelphi jumped on the Jaspers right from the opening whistle and opened the scoring just 1:33 into play. Jose Castillo sent an Adelphi corner kick into the box and Gary Sullivan made an outstanding run to get to the ball first. Sullivan out jumped everyone around him and headed the ball past Antonio Treglia for the Panthers first goal.

Adelphi kept the pressure on against a very physical Manhattan team. In the 19th minute the Panthers broke through again when Joseph Afful collected the ball in the midfield from Tal Sheinfeld and headed toward the Jasper goal. Afful beat a few Manhattan defenders and created just enough space for a shot. Afful beat the Treglia far post for Adelphi's second goal of the afternoon.

The Panthers opened the second half just like the first, adding a third goal just over seven minutes into the half. Suleyman Pehlivan and Marlon Clarke worked beautifully together as Clarke sent a ball to Pehlivan in the Manhattan box. Pehlivan sent it right back to Clarke who had his defender on his back. Clarke was able to turn and crack a shot with his left foot that found the top left corner of the net.

Adelphi had another outstanding rush in the with just over 17 minutes left in the game when Tom Cross played a ball into the box and Clarke cracked a header that hit the cross bar. Marlon McEachnie ran onto the rebound and headed another ball that hit the cross bar. Then Sheinfeld struck the ball into what looked to be an open net, but the ball was blocked by a Jasper foot.

The Panthers out shot Manhattan 33-3, and held the edge in corner kicks 13-3. Treglia made seven saves on the afternoon, while Cunningham made just one. Manhattan was unable to make a serious run at Adelphi's defense. Sullivan, Tal Lahav, and Matt Sether stifled almost every attack the Jaspers mounted on the Panther goal.

Adelphi returns to action this Wednesday, September 24th against Columbia. The game will be played at Adelphi on Stiles Field.
