Adelphi won another overtime thriller today, beating Stony Brook University 2-1 in double overtime. Tom Cunningham picked up his second win of the season in a game that was heavily dominated by the Panthers. Adelphi controlled the game except for a few counter attacks from the Seawolves.
Despite the Panthers best efforts Stony Brook scored first. In the 31st minute the Seawolves launched a counter attack and Shane Arikian got free of an Adelphi defender and struck a well placed shot on goal. Cunningham made the initial save but could not come up with the rebound, which Josh Allen slipped into the Adelphi goal.
The second half was again dominated by the Panthers, with Adelphi taking 17 shots to Stony Brooks three. Marlon Clarke and Tom Cross both had outstanding scoring opportunities but both balls were tough to control and eventually went wide of the Stony Brook net. Finally in the 84th minute of play Adelphi was able to convert. Marlon McEachnie received a cross from Cross and was able to put it past Stony Brook's Dan Ferrin. The goal was McEachnie's third of the season and tied the game at one.
The first overtime saw Adelphi and Stony Brook go back and forth exchanging attacks, with neither team able to take the advantage. Stony Brook saw their best scoring opportunity of the overtime rise over the cross bar when Carlo Santi struck a ball over the Adelphi cross bar from the six.
In the 102nd minute of the game, the Panthers took advantage of a Stony Brook mistake. Tal Sheinfeld took a free kick that was given to Adelphi due to a Stony Brook foul and sent it into the box where Joseph Afful rose above a crowd and headed the ball past Ferrin. Afful's goal gave Adelphi its second overtime win in as many games.
Adelphi out shot the visiting Seawolves 30-11, with Ferrin making eight saves and Cunningham recording 6. With the win Adelphi improves to 3-1-1, while Stony Brook drops to 2-4. The Panthers return to action this Sunday at 4 pm on Stiles Field against Manhattan.
