Panthers Fall To SCSU; Bryant Tops Barry In Final Day of the Adelphi Fall Classic

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team fell to Southern Connecticut, 1-0, in the final game of the Adelphi Fall Classic at Stiles Field. In the first game, Bryant College handed Barry University its second straight loss, topping the Buccaneers, 2-1.

After a scoreless first half, which saw #7 ranked Adelphi with a 5-3 advantage on shots on goal, the Panthers looked strong going into the second half. SCSU's Jenny Wilken (Northumberland, England), who also scored the game-winner in Saturday's upset over Barry University, scored the lone goal in the game off a deflection in the 82nd minute. Adelphi had one more attempt on goal in the 89th minute as a shot by Shannon McEntee (Valley Stream, N.Y.) hit the crossbar.

Owls' goalie Jamie Shertzer (East Setauket, N.Y.) collected seven saves, while Adelphi's Andrea Fasano (Syosset, N.Y.) had five saves.

The Panthers drop to 0-1-1, while the Owls improve to 2-0.

In game one, No. 8 ranked Barry University dominated the first half of their match-up with Bryant College, out shooting the Bulldogs 5-2. The game was scoreless at half. The second half looked to be more of the same when Candice DeFreitas (Port of Spain, Trinidad) netted her first goal of the year on a rebound off a shot from Emelie Karlsson (Helsinki, Finland). Bryant goalie, Kim Rekart (Ellicott City, Md.) got a hand on the ball but could not gain control.

Just of two minutes later Barry committed a costly foul in its own penalty box which resulted in a Bryant a penalty kick. The penalty kick was taken and converted by Christine Kalukiewicz (Littletown, Mass.) for her first goal of the season. Less then a minute later Kalukiewicz scored the game winner on a cross from Jennifer Campisi (Commack, N.Y.). Kalukiewicz received the cross and headed it over a charging Johanna Fishcer (Verum, Sweden). Fishcer collected two saves for Buccaneers, while Rekart recorded six saves for the Bulldogs.

With the win Bryant improves to 1-0-1, and Barry falls to 0-2.

Adelphi returns to action next Sunday, September 7, at East Stroudsberg. Game time is 10:00 a.m.
