#7 Adelphi ties Bryant; SCSU Upsets #8 Barry In Day One of Soccer Classic

Garden City, N.Y. - Both ranked teams struggled in day one of the Adelphi Fall Classic as the Panthers tied Bryant College, 1-1, in double overtime, Friday afternoon at Stiles Field. The Southern Connecticut State University topped #8 Barry University, 1-0, in the second game.

In the first half, Adelphi held a slight 7-5 advantage in shots, yet the score remained stalled at 0-0. The Bulldogs got on board midway through the second half as sophomore Terri Gidius (Coventry, Conn.) scored an unassisted goal past Adelphi keeper Andrea Fasano (Syosset, N.Y.) at 70:52. Senior Jennifer Garone (West Hempstead, N.Y.) kept the Panthers in the contest, scoring her first goal of the season at 81:49 on a bobbled ball from Bryant's goalie Kim Rekart (Ellicott City, Md.). Both teams remained scoreless through the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods. Fasano had six saves for Adelphi, while Rekart had 13 saves for Bryant.

Following their season opener, the Panthers are now 0-0-1. The Bulldogs record also stands at 0-0-1.

In the second game of the day, the Buccaneers dominated the ball, outshooting the Owls 16-7, but were unable to connect with the goal. Junior Dierda Colavolpe (Hamden, Conn.) kicked a long pass to senior Jenny Wilkin (Northumberland, England) who chipped the ball over Barry University goalkeeper, Johanna Fischer (Verum, Sweden), at 29:32 for the ultimate game-winner. Freshman goalie Jamie Shertzer (East Setauket, N.Y.) collected five saves for Southern Connecticut and Fischer had one save for Barry.

The Owls improve to 1-0, while the Buccaneers fall to 0-1.

The Adelphi Fall Classic continues this Sunday, August 31, with Bryant College versus Barry University 12:00 p.m. The Panthers will host Southern Connecticut at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate and are $5 for adults and $3 for students.
