Le Moyne senior Marnie Sundberg tossed her first no-hitter of the season to lead the top-seeded Dolphins to a 3-0 win over Adelphi in the final game of the day at the 2003 NCAA Division II Northeast Softball Regional at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins (44-8) host C.W. Post (35-10) in tomorrow's winners' bracket final at 3 p.m.
Sundberg struck out nine and walked one. She faced one batter over the minimum. The program's all-time leader in nearly every pitching category, Sundberg pitched her 13th shutout of the season and improved to 22-5.
The Dolphins pushed across single runs in the second, third and fifth innings. The first two runs came on wild pitches. Freshman Jennifer Winters scored on a wild pitch to put the Dolphins up 1-0 in the second and Annie Jacobs scored in the third. Jacobs tacked on an insurance run in the fifth with her fifth home run of the season. Jacobs went 2-for-3 at the plate.
No. 2 seed C.W. Post (35-10) won its game 6-0 over UMass Lowell. The Pioneers scored a run in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth inning. Joanne Moccia, Toni Neenan, Kelsey Walker and Krystle Scala had two hits each. Walker, the No. 9 hitter, homered for C.W. Post. Rebecca Chimelski had two hits for UMass Lowell.
Northeast-10 Conference rivals American International and UMass Lowell needed 17 innings to decide their opening round contest 4-2. UMass Lowell eked out a pair of runs on squeeze bunts in the 17th to pull out the win. Amber Gagnon collected the win for UML, while AIC pitcher Kelly D'Angelo was dealt the loss despite not giving up an earned run. The two pitchers combined to throw 470 pitches. Melissa Cuthbert's two-run home run accounted for all of AIC's runs.
