Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down C.W. Post, 17-11

Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi seniors accounted for eight of seventeen goals in the Panthers 17-11 victory over conference foe C.W. Post, Sunday afternoon at Stiles Field. A crowd of over 400 was on hand as the local rivals matched up the 47th time in their all-time series history. Adelphi finishes the season 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the NYCAC. The Pioneers end the season 4-8 overall and 3-4 in the NYCAC.

Adelphi was led offensively by seniors David Toy and Tyler Heavenor who each scored three goals in the win, with Heavenor also adding an assist.

Toy connected on the first of three goals to start the game at 13:04 in the first quarter. Less than two minutes later, junior Matt Schomburg gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Chris Grimm gave the Pioneers their first goal at 9:18 before junior Kim Delfs followed up with an unassisted goal at 8:01. Junior Ken Watson rattled two of his game-high four goals to tie the game at 3-3 at 6:11. Both teams traded goals to tie, 4-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Adelphi went to work in the second quarter, outscoring the Pioneers, 6-1 over the next fifteen minutes. Delfs and junior Jesse Sorensen led the team with two goals apiece. Schomburg capped the Adelphi run with a fastbreak goal, after securing the face-off and the ground ball, to lead 10-5.

Heavenor scored his second goal on an assist from senior Greg Cal Smith at the top of the third quarter on a man-down situation. The Pioneers scored again before senior Owen Zachariasse notched the first of two goals on an assist from freshman Wesley Green. Green followed up with an unassisted goal forty seconds later and assisted on Heavenor's third goal as the Panther realized their largest lead of the contest, 14-6.

The fourth quarter saw the Pioneers rally back on a 4-3 run, but it was too late as Adelphi held on for the win, 17-11.

In an extremely physical contest that saw 17 penalties between the two teams, the Pioneers were able to capitalize on 6-of-10 extra man opportunities. Adelphi was 2-of-3.

Senior Mark Miller, who is currently ranked sixth in the nation in save percentage, had a spectacular day in goal for the Panthers, tying a career-best 20 saves. Senior Mike Zagari had 10 stops on 36 shots for C.W. Post.

Prior to the start of today's game, Adelphi took time to honor its ten graduating seniors in Heavenor, David Klausner, Ken Marzigliano, Matt McGeehan, Miller, Chris Muscarella, Keith Schanars, Greg Cal Smith, Toy and Zachariasse.

Today's game will be televised on Tuesday night at 10:00 p.m. on Telecare-Channel 31, Cablevision of Long Island.
