Panthers Split With Felician

April 8, 2003

Game 1 Box Score| Game 2 Box Score

The Adelphi Baseball team took on Felician College on Sunday in a non conference doubleheader. The Panthers jumped out of the gate quick in the first game, exploding with ten runs in the game. The Panthers had their bats going as freshman Thomas Cali, junior Chris Alvarez, sophomore Adam Kipling, junior Michael Joyce, and freshman Bryan Horrmann each had a multiple hit games. Collecting RBI's in the game were Doug Anderson (2), Ricky Nicholson, Alvarez, Kipling, Joyce, Horrmann and Freshman Mike Thompson.

For the Panthers in game one, there was a new defensive alignment up the middle to turn two double plays in the first game with Thompson playing shortstop, and freshman Doug Anderson playing second base. The two infielders seemed to gel right away. The move to put Thompson at shortstop was a move that was long awaited by the Panther team. Due to pitching duties, Thompson was strictly a pitcher, but now the Panthers have found the diamond in the rough as the Key Stone Cops are Thompson and Anderson.

Sophomore Chris Zinkiewicz earned his first win of the season, going the distance in the seven inning affair. Zinkiewicz had four strikeouts, allowed five runs, three earned, and issued two walks. Game one Line: Adelphi: 10 runs, 12 hits, 3 errors Felician: 5 runs, 10 hits, 1 error

In the second game, the Panthers were caught off guard as Felician threw Jose Veras who blanked the Panthers through six innings. As he exited, the Panthers got one run on a bases loaded walk issued by Veras. Hultz, a right-hander for Felician, came in and let up two runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Panthers started off the seventh as Horrmann led off the inning with a double in the gap. Thompson had a SAC fly that advanced Horrmann to third, and made the second out of the inning. On the next play, Nicholson grounded to short, and the shortstop threw the ball away into dead ball territory allowing Horrmann to score, and the inning to continue. Next up was Cali, who hit a fly ball to right field in what looked to be the game-winner. The right fielder lost the ball in the sun, and Cali was able to reach third, with Nicholson tying the score at three. Anderson came up and laced a ball just foul, and then made the last out of the inning.

In the top of the eighth, freshman Kenneth Gates came in for relief of Andrew Tinucci, who threw seven complete innings, allowing two earned runs. Felician took the lead again as an error was made. The Panthers came up in the bottom, but failed to score. Final score Felician 4, Panthers 3.

The Panthers hope to return to action this Wednesday against St. Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, N.Y. at 3:00 p.m.
